Interrogative question - Two questions that would like to put before you this morning -
What are you telling people? (this could be spouses, kids, neighbors, co-works, ect.)
What kind of knowledge are imparting to others?
ESV, NIV and HCSB - 11 Command and teach these things.
KJV - 11 These things command and teach.
NLT - 11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.
Paul’s command to Timothy contrasts sharply with much contemporary preaching. Preaching in our day is often intriguing, but seldom commanding; often entertaining, but seldom convicting; often popular, but seldom powerful; often interesting, but less often transforming. Paul does not ask Timothy to share or make suggestions to his congregation. MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (1995). 1 Timothy (p. 170). Moody Press.

31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath;

3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.

37 Now during the day He was teaching in the temple, but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet.

5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”
The question that we must is what are we (servants of Christ) to prescribe and teach? (notice the last part of the verse “these things” - the question is what things?
“These Things” - (houtos) - pronoun, demonstrative, accusative, plural, neuter - direct object - this (demons. pron.)
The question is what is meant by the phrase “these things?”
1 Timothy 3:14 (NASB95)
14 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;
1 Timothy 4:6 (NASB95)
6 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.
1 Timothy 4:15 (NASB95)
15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
1 Timothy 5:7 (NASB95)
7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach.
1 Timothy 6:2 (NASB95)
2 Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles.
That authority is built upon a fourfold foundation. First, a strong commitment to the authority of God’s Word. A man who is unsure if the Bible is God’s Word will lack authority in his preaching. Second, proper interpretation of Scripture. The man who is not sure what the Bible means will also lack authority in his preaching. Third, a concern that the truth of God’s Word be upheld and enforced by church discipline (cf. Matt. 18:15ff.; 1 Cor. 5:1–13; 2 Thess. 3:14–15). Fourth, the knowledge that the preacher does not need to say what might please men and not offend them, but he must say what pleases God or be guilty of prostituting the ministry. MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (1995). 1 Timothy (p. 170). Moody Press.
